The London Lions, in partnership with Play it Green, will deliver an environmentally themed game day on April 22nd against the Cheshire Phoenix, using their activities as a vehicle for positive change.

The game, which will occur on Earth Day, is intended to raise awareness of climate change and encourage spectators to take action against it. The team will donate 10% of the ticket revenue from the game to planting trees – with the help of Play It Green. Individuals can support the Lions in making an environmental and social impact as part of Earth Month, by contributing to their efforts to plant 1000 trees by visiting their Forest Garden.

Brett Burman, London Lions General Manager, said, “This is a step in the right direction to lower our club’s carbon footprint, but we understand this is only the first step and more still needs to be done by UK sports teams to become more sustainable. We have a duty as a business and people to make the future brighter for the next generation and take positive actions for the planet.

“The appeal of sports has always made it extremely powerful in supporting many of societies’ issues, and there is arguably nothing bigger than climate change, so it is important we all do what we can. We aim to make positive steps ourselves and use our influential position to help others.

“Being more sustainable will support the club’s growth strategy and make the Lions more appealing to new fans, partners and audiences. Play It Green provide the education, tools and know-how to help us, and we are very happy to be working with them.”

Play It Green Co-Founder Chris Thair added, “We’re delighted to be working with London Lions and look forward to the Climate Action game on April 22nd. The club will benefit from our weekly tips and articles to help educate and create behaviour change, along with using our net-zero framework to help map out as a business how they can further lower their carbon footprint.

“After two decades working in sport, I know of its power and influence in society, so the impact of London Lions taking more sustainable actions will be felt by many more people and businesses. This is extremely positive for the London Lions, the sport of basketball and the planet.”
